Kayla Johnson is the visionary founder behind RIDE MoCo’s Rooted in Unity (RIU) — a nonprofit dedicated to connecting people and horses in transformative ways. Her story is one of passion meeting purpose, and of turning lifelong compassion for animals into opportunities for community healing and inclusion.

Kayla is also the Assistant Director of Wrenacyn, Chief Operating Officer of Pat & Kay Dog Boarding LLC.  Her journey began with a simple truth: animals were her first teachers. Growing up in Gaithersburg, she was active in the Maryland 4-H Kids N Dogs Club, where she trained her family’s Cocker Spaniel.  She had the opportunity to bring joy to nursing home residents through her pet visits. Those experiences planted the seeds for a life centered on empathy, patience, and service.

Ms. Johnson’s academic background in Lab Animal Science from Baltimore City Community College and ongoing professional training as a Stable Manager through the Equine Studies Institute strengthened her technical expertise. But her heart remained focused on access — ensuring that horseback riding wasn’t just for the few, but open to all.

Kayla founded RIDE MoCo’s Rooted in Unity (RIU) -- a Montgomery County, Maryland nonprofit that celebrates the connection between humans and horses while breaking down barriers to access. The program was born out of a simple but powerful idea: horseback riding shouldn’t be a privilege; it should be an opportunity open to everyone.

RIU focuses on inclusivity, growth, and well-being, through “out-of-school” programs, welcoming children and youth — with and without disabilities.  They come together to learn riding, horse care, teamwork, empathy, patience, and the joy of stewardship. RIU fosters growth not just in skill, but in spirit.
Under Kayla’s leadership, RIU is becoming a vibrant and welcoming space where healing and learning happen side by side. The program is described as transformative — not just for the children but for the community itself.

A Vision for the Future
Her vision for RIDE MoCo’s Rooted in Unity extends beyond riding lessons; she envisions a regional model of inclusive, nature-based education where the healing power of animals continues to bring people together across differences.  RIU makes horseback riding accessible for all, fostering inclusion, personal growth, and community connection through equine-assisted learning and care.
“Animals don’t judge, and neither should we,” Kayla says with her trademark calm smile. “They teach us to be present, to listen, and to care — and that’s something every person deserves to experience.”
